Move to Freshwater, Sydney – New South Wales, Australia

Called Harbord until 2008, Freshwater is a surfing mad suburb of Sydney. 17 kilometres out from the CBD and just past Manly, it’s one of the Northern Beaches in Warringah district. It was at Freshwater beach in 1915, “Duke” Kahanamoku (aka the Big Kahuna), a famous Hawaiian surfer based in Waikiki, introduced Australia to the art of surfing. Impressed by the pliable local timber, Duke carved himself a long-board and showed off his skills to thousands of locals, sparking off a tradition that coastal Australians have embraced ever since. The Duke is immortalised in a statue, stationed on the Northern Headland above Freshwater.

Move to Fremantle, Western Australia

Fremantle, or ‘Freo’ to the locals, is the main port of Western Australia. It is 19 kilometres from the Perth CBD, South West over the mouth of the Swan River. Now a suburb of Perth, Fremantle was a separate city for most of its history. It has been an active port ever since the Swan River Colony was established in 1829, and is one of the best preserved working ports anywhere, of the 19th century.

Maleny is a small rural town 100 kilometres north of Brisbane, Queensland. Stanwell Park is a picturesque semi-rural beach suburb 26 kilometres north of Wollongong CBD. The beach stretches between two bush clad headlands. The surf is popular for its consistent left and right hand breaks and it can get busy down there when the waves are high.
